What is NSSA?

The National Social Security Authority (NSSA) is a statutory body established under the NSSA Act (Chapter 17:04). It administers two mandatory schemes for employers in Zimbabwe:

Accident Prevention and Workers' Compensation Scheme (APWCS)
Provides compensation for employees who are injured, contract diseases, or die as a result of their work. ALL employers must register. (Formerly known as WCIF.)
Pension and Other Benefits Scheme (POBS)
Provides retirement pensions, invalidity benefits, and survivors' benefits to employees. Mandatory for all employers with employees between 16 and 65. (Formerly known as NPS.)

Registration Requirements

You must register with NSSA within 30 days of hiring your first employee. You need:

  • Certificate of Incorporation (from Registrar of Companies)
  • CR14 (return of directors)
  • CR6 (registered office address)
  • Directors' national IDs (copies)
  • Completed NSSA registration form
  • Business licence (how to get one)

How to Register

Gather Your Documents

Collect your Certificate of Incorporation, CR14, CR6 and directors' IDs. Make copies of everything.

Visit the Nearest NSSA Office

Go to your nearest NSSA office with all documents. Alternatively, start the process through the NSSA online portal.

Complete the Registration Form

Fill in the employer registration form. You'll need to provide details about your business, number of employees, and nature of work (for risk classification).

Receive Your NSSA Number

Once registered, you'll receive an NSSA employer registration number. Use this for all contributions and correspondence.

Start Making Contributions

Contributions are due monthly. Submit returns and payment by the 10th of the following month.

Contribution Rates

Workers' Compensation (APWCS)

  • Paid by the employer only
  • Rate depends on the risk category of your industry
  • Ranges from approximately 2% (low risk, e.g., office work) to 11% (high risk, e.g., mining)
  • Calculated on total payroll

Pension (POBS)

  • Total contribution: 9% of insurable earnings
  • Employer pays: 4.5%
  • Employee pays: 4.5% (deducted from salary)
  • Insurable earnings are capped at USD 700 per month
Penalties: Late registration and late payment of contributions attract penalties. Register on time and pay monthly to avoid unnecessary costs.

  • Submit monthly contribution returns
  • Make payments online
  • View contribution history

  • File workers compensation claims
