How to book, what to study, fees and the pass mark

About the Learners Licence Test

The learners licence (provisional licence) is the first step to getting a full drivers licence in Zimbabwe. You must pass a written test covering road signs, rules of the road and vehicle controls.

Test Sections

  • Road signs — regulatory, warning and information signs
  • Rules of the road — right of way, overtaking, speed limits, traffic light rules
  • Vehicle controls — dashboard instruments, basic vehicle operation

What to Study

The official study material is the Zimbabwe Highway Code. You should know:

  • All road signs — you must get 100% on this section
  • Road markings — single line, double line, broken line
  • Traffic rules — right of way at intersections, roundabouts, traffic lights
  • Speed limits — urban (60 km/h), rural (80-120 km/h)
  • Overtaking rules — when you can and cannot overtake
  • Vehicle controls — what each pedal and instrument does
  • Defensive driving — following distance, night driving, wet weather
Tip: Buy the Zimbabwe Highway Code booklet from the VID depot or a bookshop. Study the road signs thoroughly — you must get 100% on that section.
